After suffering four miscarriages, a small-town southern woman, Davie, is losing hope for the family she's always dreamed of having. Plagued by insomnia and yearning for some excitement in her life, Davie begins spying on her handsome new neighbor Clay, who has moved in across the street with his grandfather, an invalid Davie regularly cooks meals for. As Clay and his grandfather renew their relationship, his grandfather schemes to escape the dreaded reverend from the local church who's intent on baptizing the old man before he dies. One night, while jogging, Clay catches Davie stalking him and a friendship begins, which galvanizes the depressed Davie but arouses the suspicions of her husband Paul. Realizing he may be losing his wife, Paul implores Davie to focus on their marriage but she is oddly noncommittal. Frustrated, Paul leaves. Meanwhile, Davie's wild sister Lucy is having second thoughts about her loser fiancee and starts flirting with a most unexpected man as well, the gently nerdy new preacher in town. With Paul gone, Davie and Clay are drawn closer together, and in a moment of vulnerability, Clay reveals to Davie that his baby daughter died. Davie realizes their connection is on a deeper level... they share the loss of a child. Then Clay's grandfather, sensing his impending mortality, sets off on his own to settle his score with God and is discovered dead the next day. Emotionally adrift, Clay turns to Davie who launches herself at him with a kiss that surprises them both. Davie returns home long enough to pack away her things for the baby that never materialized and to have it out with the reverend in church. But just as she prepares to sleep with Clay, an abandoned baby appears on their doorstep and she must decide what she really wants.
